What is minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery?
Laparoscopic surgery involves the use of a rigid camera ( with the option of an angulated lens) with a light and camera attached to diagnose and treat conditions. It involves creating only a few small incisions, which have significant benefits, including a faster recovery time, minimal scarring, and less pain than traditional, open surgery.
Types of Laparoscopic Procedures:
Diagnostic Laparoscopy
Diagnostic laparoscopy is a medical procedure that allows surgeons to view and assess the contents within the abdomen and pelvis. It is typically an outpatient procedure performed while the patient is under general anaesthesia.
Diagnostic laparoscopy is usually done for the following reasons:
- When traditional methods like ultrasound and X-ray fall short, a laparoscopic procedure steps in to diagnose the cause of abdominal and pelvic pain or locate abnormal growths in these areas. After a traumatic injury, the extent of damage to the abdominal organs must be determined.
Laparoscopic Inguinal and Ventral Hernia Repairs
Laparoscopic hernia repair (keyhole procedure) is a less invasive surgical procedure meant to repair a hernia, when a portion of tissue protrudes through a weakened spot in the abdominal wall.
The procedure involves creating a few tiny incisions over the abdomen and carefully inserting a tiny scope (laparoscope) to repair the hernia using a special mesh.
